1. Elafonissi – The Famous Pink Sand Beach
Elafonissi at Crete's southwestern tip is the island's most famous beach. Shallow turquoise water and fine sand with a soft pink tint – arrive before 9:30 am in peak season.
2. Balos Lagoon
Europe's most photogenic beach. Reachable by boat from Kissamos or 4x4 plus a short hike. Morning tours are calmer in windy weather.
3. Preveli – Palm Beach
A rare palm forest where a cool river flows into the Libyan Sea. 15–20 min descent from the car park (€3). No food or drinks on the beach – bring supplies.
4. Falassarna – Sunsets & Surfing
Kilometres of wide sand in western Crete, popular with surfers and sunset lovers. Less crowded than Elafonissi.
5. Vai – Europe's Largest Palm Grove
Endemic Cretan palms line a golden beach near Sitia. Arrive early in high season.
6. Seitan Limania
A spectacular white pebble cove between steep cliffs. Steep, slippery descent – not for small children.
7. Matala
Famous hippie-era cave dwellings in the cliffs. Relaxed sandy beach, family-friendly shallow water.
8. Stavros
Protected lagoon with calm, shallow water – perfect for families, 15 km from Chania.
9. Kedrodasos – Hidden Gem
Wild beach east of Elafonissi with no facilities. Bring everything you need.
10. Frangokastello
Wide sand beach in front of an imposing Venetian castle on the south coast.
11. Agiofarago
30-minute hike through a dramatic gorge leads to a secluded pebble bay. Bring water and start early.
12. Xerokambos
Remote turquoise coves far from mass tourism – ideal for peace seekers with a rental car.
13. North Coast Beaches
Practical and beautiful: Agia Marina & Platanias near Chania, Rethymno city beach and Amoudara near Heraklion.
