Mystical Voulismeni Lake in the heart of a lively harbour town.

Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos is the city's heart – an almost circular freshwater lake linked to the sea by a narrow channel. Myths speak of bottomless depths; divers have measured over 60 metres.

Tavernas, cafés and boutiques ring the lake. By day, sit in plane-tree shade and people-watch. By evening, city lights reflect on the water.

Ideal base for Spinalonga, Elounda and Lasithi Plateau. The town offers a pretty harbour, nearby beaches and a relaxed, elegant atmosphere.

Tip: Coffee by the lake is a must. Thursday market. Park on the outskirts and walk.
