Arkadi Monastery

Arkadi Monastery is one of Crete's most important historical monuments. The elegant Renaissance facade with baroque touches feels from another era – and tells the island's turbulent story.

In 1866 hundreds of Cretans chose death over surrender during the uprising against the Ottomans – the gunpowder stores exploded. Today Arkadi is a place of remembrance and pride for all Greeks.

Visit the church, courtyard with fountain, museum and memorial. Peaceful mountain scenery contrasts with dramatic history.

Tip: Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered). 1–1.5 hours. Combine with Rethymno old town or Kourtaliotiko gorge.
