Balos Lagoon

Dream lagoon with sandbar – Crete's most iconic postcard view.

Balos is no ordinary beach – it is a natural wonder. A narrow sandbar links the mainland to the Tigani peninsula while separating the turquoise lagoon from the deeper sea. Colours shift between emerald, turquoise and deep blue – a sight that enchants every visitor.

The most popular approach is by boat from Kissamos or Kastelli, often passing the Venetian fortress on Gramvousa island. The adventurous can hike down from the car park above – about 20–30 minutes on a steep path. Tiring, but the reward on the beach is unbeatable.

Once there, swim in the shallow lagoon, walk the sandbar or climb the rocks for a panoramic view. The wild, untouched atmosphere makes Balos unforgettable.

Tip: Start early or take a late boat tour to avoid crowds. Sturdy shoes for the descent, sun protection and plenty of water. Best accessible April to October.
