Elafonissi Beach

Pink sand, turquoise water and Caribbean flair at Crete's southwestern tip.

The first time you see Elafonissi, you understand why it ranks among Greece's most famous beaches. Fine sand with a soft pink tint, shallow turquoise water and a small lagoon that becomes an island at low tide – it feels like the Caribbean, only on Crete.

You can stand in the warm water for hours, paddle with children in the shallows or simply gaze across the lagoon. Arrive early in the morning for the best experience: the beach is almost empty, the light is perfect for photos and the heat is still pleasant.

A walk along the narrow sandbar to the opposite islet is worthwhile. Along the way you will find rock formations, crushed-shell sand and crystal-clear water. Bring a parasol – shade is scarce.

Tip: Elafonissi is at its best on weekdays and outside peak season (May, June, September). Bring water, sunscreen and comfortable sandals. The mountain drive from Chania is spectacular.
