Gortyn Excavations

Ruins of one of ancient Crete's most powerful cities.

Gortyna was one of ancient Crete's most important Roman cities – provincial capital home to 300,000 people. Today ruins scatter across the Messara plain: an odeon, nymphaeum, Byzantine churches and the famous Gortyn law code carved in stone.

The site is expansive and less crowded than Knossos. Wander through olive groves discovering columns, mosaics and walls. The odeon arena is especially impressive.

Ideal for history lovers exploring Crete's Roman era. Combine with Phaistos and Matala.

Tip: Sturdy shoes, sun protection – little shade. Audio guide recommended. 1–2 hours.
