Lasithi Plateau

Mountain plateau with windmills, villages and the birthplace of Zeus.

The Lasithi Plateau is another world – 850 metres above the sea, ringed by the Dikti mountains. Traditional stone windmills, green fields, mountain villages and the Diktaean Cave where myth says Zeus was born.

The winding drive up is an experience in itself. Breathe clear mountain air and enjoy the highland. Visit Psychro Cave, walk to the windmills and try local dishes in a village taverna.

Best in spring (green and flowering) or autumn (golden). Snow possible in winter.

Tip: Sturdy shoes for the cave (slippery steps). Warm layer – cooler up top. Combine with Kato Zakros or Vai beach.
