Matala Caves

Legendary cliff caves on the beach – from hippies to today a cult spot.

Matala has a special soul. Rock caves used as dwellings since antiquity line a golden sand beach on the Libyan Sea. In the 1960s hippies from around the world came here – Joni Mitchell wrote a song about Matala.

Today visit the caves (entry fee), swim and eat fresh fish in tavernas. The relaxed, slightly alternative atmosphere remains. Evenings, locals and visitors share the beach at sunset.
