Palace of Knossos

The heart of the Minoan world – 4,000 years of history you can touch.

Knossos is more than ruins – it is the cradle of European high culture. Minoan kings once ruled here; the legend of the labyrinth and the Minotaur was born here. Today you walk through reconstructed colonnades, admire vivid frescoes and sense a civilisation that rivalled Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Highlights: the throne room with its original stone throne, grand staircases and dolphin frescoes. A good guide or audio tour brings the stones to life.

Allow 2–3 hours. Combine with the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion for the original frescoes. Early morning or late afternoon avoids crowds and heat.

Tip: Sturdy shoes, hat and water. Combined museum ticket is worthwhile. Children love the Minotaur stories.
