Samaria Gorge

16 kilometres through Europe's longest gorge – an adventure for the senses.

The Samaria Gorge is no stroll – it is a real adventure. 16 kilometres through walls up to 300 metres high. The Iron Gates passage is only four metres wide. At the end, Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea awaits with a refreshing swim.

Along the way: Cretan wilderness, goats on cliffs, rare flowers, rushing streams and breathtaking views. The hike takes 5–7 hours and requires fitness, sturdy shoes and plenty of water.

Starts at Omalos (1,200 m) in the White Mountains National Park, ends at Agia Roumeli; ferry back to Sougia or Hora Sfakion. Open May to October, weather permitting.

Tip: Start early (7–8 am), at least 2 litres of water, snacks, sun protection. No flip-flops. Less fit walkers: upper section to Iron Gates and back.
