Spinalonga

Venetian fortress and moving history on a small island.

Spinalonga is an island of stories. Venice built an imposing fortress here; later it became Greece's last leper colony until 1957. Today it is a powerful open-air museum.

The boat from Elounda or Plaka takes 10–15 minutes – the crossing through the crystal bay is an experience in itself. Wander deserted houses, fortress walls and small churches. The atmosphere is moving and reflective.

Victoria Hislop's novel 'The Island' made Spinalonga world-famous. Allow 1.5–2 hours on the island.

Tip: First or last boat for beautiful light. Sun protection and water – little shade. Combine with a swim in Elounda.
